BEL017 – EXHIBITION DESIGN: DE OUDAAN & DE WILDE ZEE
BEL Architects had the honor of being invited by the international arts centre deSingel and the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAI) to create an exhibition as part of the “Young Makers Thinkers Dreamers” series.
In deSingel’s iconic long corridor, BEL presented its research on the Oudaan and Wilde Zee site in the heart of Antwerp — a dense urban fabric layered with history.
This site brings together diverse urban typologies and time periods: the former Augustinian monastery, Renaat Braem’s iconic police tower, and the 1970s shopping complex “De Bijenkorf.”
The investigation culminated in seven speculative proposals:
Romantic Mountain, Diamond, Market Hall, Honeycomb, A Secret Garden, Mass, and Antwerp Central — exhibited during the winter of 2012.
Each hypothetical project was visualized through a signature isometric drawing and an evocative, narrative-driven image.
The exhibition was accompanied by the publication BEL, no. 88, in the renowned Vlees & Beton series.
