BEL049 – SPORTS PARK AND SPORTS HALL VERONA
Bertem – Multifunctional Sports Hall in a Natural Landscape
The municipality of Bertem plans a new multifunctional sports hall to serve the town and its districts, located on a gently sloping site between Dorpstraat and Kerstraat, next to the VC Bertem Leefdaal football fields. The site is an open green meadow and a key visual link between the Duisburg plateau in the south and the Voer valley in the north, while marking the last open space along the Dorpsstraat corridor connecting Bertem and Leefdaal.
The design respects and enhances the natural landscape, covering the site with a “green carpet” of 16-meter-wide strips of grass, flowers, plants, and scattered trees, creating a cohesive sport park. The sports hall sits atop the slope like a large “boulder,” its rounded form integrating seamlessly into the terrain. Gentle ramps connect the hall with outdoor fields, while a natural outdoor grandstand provides seating in grass terraces.
The curved, pavilion-like building has a continuous façade with no “back,” reducing energy loss and allowing flexible interior layouts that reflect the exterior form. This results in a compact, light-filled, welcoming space optimized for both athletes and visitors—a sports hall designed for enjoyment and community.
